Renters Insurance for Unmarried Couples

More than ever before, unmarried couples are choosing to live together. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that it’s cheaper for two people to live in only one residence. But can unmarried couples be covered under a single renters insurance policy? In most cases, the answer is yes; however, many couples have their insurance set up the wrong way.

Renters insurance is designed to protect your property and liability risks within the walls of your rental residence. But on most standard policies, this protection extends only to the named insured and his or her resident spouse or relatives. In this case, a significant other to whom the insured person is not married may not share the same protection. However, this doesn’t mean a partner cannot be added to a renters insurance policy.

Many insurance providers will allow you add your significant other to your policy as a second named insured. If this cannot be done with your carrier, another option is to endorse your partner onto the policy as a roommate. While the first option generally costs less, the second option can at least provide some peace of mind.

When arranged properly, renters insurance for unmarried couples is entirely possible, albeit possibly with a different insurance carrier. The best way to ensure that you’ve set up your coverage correctly is to work with a skilled independent insurance agent. No matter the composition of the residence, your agent will be able to help you find a policy that protects everyone and their belongings.
